Dirt Smart Plan it. Plant it. Pick it.

Add a bed or area

Walk around the edge: enter each side's length and which way you turn at its end. A square corner is a 90° turn.

You'll click each corner right on the grid. Corners snap to the grid so edges line up.

  • Click the first corner again, or press Enter, to finish.
  • Backspace removes the last corner. Esc cancels.
  • Drag to move around while drawing; scroll to zoom.

Trace the outline of your yard or field on a satellite photo.

  1. Find your property and pick the polygon tool.
  2. Click around the edge, then click the first corner to finish.
  3. Click the shape and choose Use as garden space.

It comes back here as a clean, to-scale outline, and your garden's location is set at the same time.

Where's your garden?

Your town or ZIP code is enough. It sets your frost dates, planting calendar and weather.

Smart fill

Pick a theme and the bed is planted for you: tall plants on the north side so they don't shade the rest, each at its own spacing, around anything already growing there.

Answers come from Dirt Smart's own plant, pest and calendar info for your garden. Nothing you type leaves your device.

How Dirt Smart works

Getting started
  1. Set your location on the Map tab (search your address). That brings in your hardiness zone, frost dates and weather.
  2. Make your garden space: trace it on the satellite map, or type its size in the editor.
  3. Add beds: "+ Add a bed or area", or Draw one by clicking its corners. Type sizes like 4' 6" or 54in.
  4. Plant: pick a plant in the Plants list, then click inside a bed. Circles show the room each plant needs.
Handy tools
Beds and shapes

Drag a bed to move it; drag its round knob to turn it (it snaps in line with your garden). Drag corner dots to reshape, or the small bar in the middle of a side to push that whole side out or in; right-click a corner to remove it, double-click an edge to add one. Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V copy and paste, Ctrl+Z undoes. Turn on Square-foot grid in a bed's details to plant by the square.

Paths bend: select a path and drag the + past either end to keep it going, or the small + in the middle of a stretch to bend it. If a bed or shed is in the way, the path goes around it on its own (hold Alt while dragging to go straight through). Drag the big dot at either end to stretch or swing that end, or the bars on its sides to make it wider or narrower. Right-click a bend's dot to remove it.

Path materials: pick gravel, mulch, pavers, brick, stepping stones, concrete or grass in the path's details. Drop a path's end on another path of the same material and they join into one; different materials stay separate.

Plants and companions

The Garden check lists anything worth knowing: crowding, shade, companions, soil and rotation. Click a plant for its good and bad neighbors. Edit plant list changes spacing and timing, adds your own plants, or starts from a popular variety. Each plant's 3D look can be changed there too.

Sun, shade and layers

Layers ▾ adds information over your plan: Sun hours (a heat map of daily sun, with "Find best spots" for any plant), Sun & shade for any date and time, wind, bed health, and last season's plants. Draw your house as a structure and big trees as Shade tree so their shadows count.

3D view

3D view shows your garden in 3D. Drag to spin, right-drag to slide, scroll to zoom. Grow plays the season so plants grow, flower and fruit on their real schedule; Sun moves the sun.

Calendar, seasons and soil

The Calendar shows what to do now, the planting timeline, your forecast, and the season's warmth (with pests timed by it). Each bed's details have a soil card (with amounts to add) and its crop history. Start next year saves this year for crop rotation; the ‹ › arrows switch between years.

Notebook

Log notes, photos, harvests, pests and watering in the Journal. Harvests adds up what you picked; Seeds & shopping makes your seed list; Water says whether to water today; Materials totals soil and lumber; Pests & diseases is a guide with organic fixes.

Your gardens, phone and offline

Add more gardens from the garden menu at the top (each has its own location and history). Install app puts it on your home screen, and it works offline. Your gardens are saved in this browser: use the garden menu → Save this garden as a file to back up or move a garden to another device.

Numbers (spacing, timing, amounts) are typical values from seed packets and university extension guides. Your seed packet and local extension office know best. · Privacy

The squeeze test

Dig down a few inches and grab a handful of soil. Wet it a little if it's dry, so it feels like damp cake. Squeeze it in your fist, then open your hand and poke it.

What does it do?

Rotation plan

Each bed moves one step around the circle each year: 🫘 beans & peas → 🥬 leaves & cabbages → 🍅 fruiting crops → 🥕 roots & onions → back to beans. That keeps pests and diseases from settling in, and each crop gets the soil it likes. Click a bed to open it.

Plant list

    Edit plant

    When to plant

Leave "Start seeds indoors" empty to sow straight into the garden. A negative "Plant outside" means before the last frost (-4 = four weeks before).
