The short version
Dirt Smart has no ads and no tracking. Without an account, your gardens, plants, notes and photos are saved only in your own browser on your own device, and we never receive them. If you choose to sign in, they're also stored in your private account so they sync between your devices.
What stays on your device
Everything you create: garden layouts, beds and plants, soil tests, journal entries, photos, harvests and seed lists. It's kept in your browser's storage. Clearing your browser's data for this site deletes it, so use Save this garden as a file (in the ๐ก menu) to keep a backup. Garden files you save are yours: they go wherever you put them.
If you sign in (optional)
Accounts are run on Supabase (supabase.com), a database and sign-in service. When you sign in, it stores:
- your email address, to sign you in (we email you a sign-in link; there's no password);
- your gardens (layouts, plants, journal, harvests, soil tests, crop history, and the garden's location if you set one), your seed stash, plant list, plant notes and prices;
- your journal photos, in a private folder only your account can open;
- the emails of people you share a garden with, and whether they can view or edit it. People you share a garden with can see that garden, including its location, and your email address as the person who shared it.
Security rules on the database let each account read and change only its own data and gardens shared with it. We don't sell or share your data, and we don't use it for advertising. You can stop syncing any time by signing out; to have your account and everything in it deleted, email us at the address below.
What is sent to other services, and why
To show climate and maps for your garden, the app asks these free public services for information. They receive the garden's location (or your search text), plus the technical details every web request has, such as your IP address:
| Service | What it's asked | Why |
|---|---|---|
| NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information | The garden's approximate location, and nearby weather stations | Frost dates, temperatures, rainfall averages |
| US National Weather Service (api.weather.gov) | The garden's location | Forecast, frost alerts, wind, rain |
| Open-Meteo (api.open-meteo.com) | The garden's approximate location (api.open-meteo.com and archive-api.open-meteo.com) | Soil temperature, the rain that fell this week, and (outside the US) the forecast, frost dates, zone and temperature records |
| phzmapi.org | The garden's ZIP code | USDA hardiness zone |
| OpenStreetMap (Nominatim and map tiles) | Address searches, the garden's location, and the map area you're viewing | Finding places, place names, street maps |
| Esri World Imagery | The map area you're viewing | Satellite photos |
| cdnjs, unpkg and jsDelivr | Requests for the map and 3D code libraries | Loading the app's map and 3D parts |
| Cloudflare (our web host) | Ordinary web requests for the app's pages | Serving the app |
| Supabase (only if you sign in) | Your email, gardens, seeds, notes and photos | Signing in, syncing between your devices, and sharing gardens |
Each service has its own privacy policy. Apart from Supabase when you sign in, we don't send them your name, email, or garden plans.
Your location
The app only uses your device's GPS when you press ๐ Me or Use my current location, and your browser asks your permission first. GPS readings are used on your device to place the dot on your plan and aren't sent anywhere.
Children
Dirt Smart isn't meant for children under 13 to sign up for an account. Without an account, it doesn't collect personal information from anyone.
Changes
If we change what's stored or who it's shared with, we'll update this page first. Signing in will always be optional.
